5 Case Studies that Show How Chiropractic Care Can Treat ADHD

Can Chiropractic Care Help ADHD?

The number of individuals who are diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder grows every single year; and while we haven’t been able to pinpoint one specific cause of it, research shows that the neurobiological condition might be caused by birth trauma, spinal misalignment, or damage to the nervous systems and cervicals.

When it comes to treating ADHD, one of the most common methods is stimulant medication, but there are significant consequences for children and adults who rely on stimulant medication, including:

  • Fluctuations in attention

  • Problems exerting control over behavior

  • Behavioral rebound

  • Appetite suppression

  • Poor sleep

  • Decreased appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Increased blood pressure

  • Dizziness

  • Headaches

  • Stomach aches

  • Moodiness

  • Irritability

Due to the number of complications that arise from stimulant medication, more people are turning to noninvasive forms of treatment like chiropractic care.

Many people question whether a chiropractor can actually relieve ADHD and its symptoms; but here are just five cases where chiropractic care didn’t just help individuals with ADHD, it succeeded where other treatment options failed.

Cases Where Chiropractic Care Successfully Treated ADHD

A case study published in 2012 reports how a 5-year old boy saw noticeable improvements in his behavior, school performance and socialization after being treated with chiropractic care for a period of 12 weeks. The child’s treatment included spinal manipulative therapy, soft tissue therapy and stretching three times a week, and later 2 times a week.

This study oversaw the treatment of 4 boys between the ages of 9 and 13 who were all diagnosed with ADHD, three of which had attempted treatment through the use of medication. All four of the patients saw significant improvement in their ADHD symptoms, including hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness, as well as behavioral, social, or emotional difficulties, after receiving regular chiropractic care.

This case study illustrates how a 10-year-old child with ADHD and a history of violent outbreaks, to the point that he was even suspended from school, saw significant improvement in his behavior, sleeping, emotional detachment, and panic attacks after receiving chiropractic care. Low-force chiropractic manipulation addressed many of the problems along different segments of his spine.

A case study submitted to the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics reports how a six-year-old boy with ADHD saw positive improvements in his disorder symptoms. After 6 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, craniosacral therapy, movement exercises and nutritional supplementation, parents, teachers and bus drivers saw improvements in the child’s behavior, who was also able to stop using his medication during the treatment period.

A report published this past June demonstrates how a 7-year-old girl with ADHD saw drastic improvements in her symptoms after receiving chiropractic care. Within 4 visits, her behavior, mood and sleep patterns improved drastically, as well as her ability to manager her others symptoms. Previous treatment options like behavioral therapy, psychotherapy and dietary intervention did not work, but the chiropractic adjustments showed initial and later continued success in her relieving symptoms.
