Chiropractic and the Immune System

Tis’ the Season for Weak Immune Systems

Affectionately known as “sweater weather,” winter season is here, and for many of us, it means cozy flannels, warm fires, and snow days. But what about the rise in cold and flu cases?

According to the CDC, there are millions of common cold cases reported each year, with the majority of these occurring in winter or spring. Infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Dr. William Schaffner reports that “The winter season is the time of year when we have more respiratory infections.”

With the drop in temperature, the amount of time spent in close quarters with other people, and the increase in dry air that weakens our body’s resistance, we’re at a higher risk for:

  • Common Cold

  • Influenza

  • Acute Bronchitis

  • Chronic Bronchitis

  • Whooping cough

  • Pneumonia

So with the cold season here, what are your best chances of not just recovering from respiratory infections and other winter illnesses, but keeping your immune system strong so that you can fight them off in the first place?

How Chiropractic Care Can Boost Your Immune System

When it comes to strengthening our immune systems, traditional Western medicine relies heavily on prescription medications that are designed to fight off symptoms, rather than tackle what’s weakening our immune systems in the first place.

But if you ask any practitioner of holistic medicine, they will tell you that our bodies are inherently equipped to strengthen our immune system and fight off infections if they are in proper alignment. Take chiropractic care for example.

Chiropractors all agree that patients who receive regular adjustments experience fewer infections and illnesses each year. But where’s the science to support this?

Studies show that spinal adjustments have a positive effect on the body’s immune system, and by reducing the number of interferences in the nervous system, chiropractic adjustments are able to strengthen the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems - which all have a role in fighting off immune-related illnesses.

If you have a history of succumbing to illness each winter, consider how regular chiropractic care could give your immune system the boost it needs to make it through the cold season. To learn more about how chiropractic care can help your immunity, or to schedule an appointment, contact us today!
